Five Musts for PDF File Preparation

It is important to prepare your files correctly for output, in order to achieve the best quality results in printing and production. An inadequately prepared PDF file can make output impossible. Please pay attention to these five critical factors.

1. If the file has been created incorrectly or contains nonprintable elements, those errors will be transferred to the PDF file.

2. Avoid files created with PDFWriter. This printer driver cannot access the information in an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) file, so if an EPS is placed in a page and sent to PDFWriter, only the screen preview (72 dpi bitmap) is transferred to the PDF page.

3. If at all possible, always use the Acrobat Distiller PPD file. It uses a PostScript interpreter to convert PostScript data into PDF. The PPD file is device-independent and allows for optimum output control.

4. Always embed fonts in the PDF. This ensures that the correct fonts are used when creating the layout in Distiller and outputing it in our print shop.

5. If using Distiller, use the appropriate Distiller settings for the medium you are saving to, i.e. SCREEN, PRINT or PRESS.
